MM3D vs TZ MAPS: What’s the difference

If you use TIMEZERO marine navigation software (TZ Navigator or TZ Professional), you’ve probably seen two names mentioned when it comes to charts: MM3D and TZ MAPS.

Both MM3D and TZ MAPS will give you the charts you need for your navigation, but they work in different ways. This guide explains what each one is, the differences between both, and how you can get the best value for your money.

What is MM3D?

To put it simply, MM3D is the old chart format of TIMEZERO, which operates in the “classic” way of buying marine charts.

Think of it like this:
You buy a chart for an area (your region)
You choose a format (Raster or Vector)
✅ You now have that chart, in that area/format

How MM3D works

As mentioned above, there are two types of charts available in MM3D: Raster and Vector.

  • Raster charts = digital, scanned versions of traditional paper charts, with the same look and feel.
  • Vector charts = modern interactive charts that allow you to tap objects like buoys, marinas, lights, etc., to access more data and relevant information.

If you want the same region in both formats, you typically need to buy both. Additionally, when updates are released, you need to purchase the latest version of the same chart (albeit at a discount).

When is MM3D your best option?

While MM3D charts are still available to purchase on TIMEZERO, they are the old chart format, and thus, we recommend only purchasing MM3D charts when you do not have the option to purchase TZ MAPS. This will be the case for users who have an old version of TIMEZERO, or an older version of TZT hardware, for which TZ MAPS is not compatible.

So, What is TZ MAPS?

TZ MAPS is an upgrade of TIMEZEROs chart offering. Instead of purchasing one chart for your area, you will receive an all-in-one chart package for your preferred area.

This means that TZ MAPS will give you access to all of the available charts and formats for your region, regular complimentary updates, and whole range of exclusive features.

What you get in a TZ MAPS area

A TZ MAPS area will typically include all of the following:

  • Vector charts
  • Raster charts (available in most areas)
  • Detailed land data
  • High-resolution satellite imagery (where available)
  • High-resolution bathymetric charts/BathyVision (though resolution can vary depending on the area)

Simply put, that means: more layers, more detail, and more tools.

The biggest difference: updates + value

1) Continuous updates

TZ MAPS includes continuous chart updates for 12 months, so your chart data stays up-to-date throughout the year.

With MM3D, updates are usually managed more like “renew when you want,” with the length of availability varying between chart formats.

2) One purchase gives you more

With TZ MAPS, you’re typically getting multiple chart formats, extra chart layers, and advanced features for a single area. With MM3D, you’re only getting one chart. In addition to all the amazing features, when you purchase a TZ MAPS area for your TIMEZERO PC Software or NavNet device you can use it for free on your iPhone/iPad with TZ iBoat!

TZ MAPS Features

Alongside the additional charts, TZ MAPS users also unlock some exclusive user-requested tools. These include:

  • BathyVision: bathymetric charts that show clearer bottom structure, configurable contours. These are especially useful for fishing and understanding what’s beneath you in greater detail.
  • Dynamic Lights: surrounding light sectors displayed based on your boat’s position, for better situational awareness.
  • Dynamic Moorings: a feature that helps you identify the best locations to anchor, based on weather conditions.
  • Community Maps: access to crowd-sourced local knowledge to better understand your area.
  • Smart Search: faster searching with a browser-like feature that quickly helps you locate destinations, as well as objects like buoys and tide stations.
  • Smart Zones: customizable alarms that notify you when you enter/leave defined zones (restricted areas, hazards, etc.)
  • Route Assist: a faster method of creating a route. Select two-way points and let TIMEZERO do the rest.

“Why is MM3D discounted but TZ MAPS looks full price?”

This is the most common question we receive when it comes to understanding the difference between MM3D and TZ MAPS, and the answer is actually quite simple:

  • A discounted MM3D update usually means renewing one chart format (Raster or Vector) for one region.
  • TZ MAPS is an upgrade on MM3D. It’s a bigger package that gives you more charts, more features, more flexibility — and most importantly, better long-term value.

While it might look like TZ MAPS is never discounted, that’s because you are comparing the renewal price of your MM3D chart to your first year of TZ MAPS.

After that first year, you’re no longer on the “first purchase” price: you move to the TZ MAPS preferential renewal rate (annual subscription), which is typically cheaper than MM3D discounted updates, while also giving you access to far more content (Raster* + Vector, plus additional layers, features, BathyVision and Community Charts).

In other words:

  • Year One: TZ MAPS = full price (same logic as a first MM3D purchase)
  • Year Two: TZ MAPS = preferential renewal rate (the real “deal” — and usually the point where TZ MAPS becomes the smarter spend)

That’s why TZ MAPS may look “full price” at first glance — but it’s only full price on the first purchase, and the renewal is where TZ MAPS users start saving money, while also getting a much broader chart library and more capabilities for their navigation area.

Switching to TZ MAPS (you won’t lose your MM3D charts)

If you upgrade to TZ MAPS, the MM3D charts you have already purchased remain available to you in your TIMEZERO PC software and NavNet device, so you keep what you own, and you get the newer TZ MAPS package on top.

If you’re ready to make the switch, you can upgrade to TZ MAPS:

  • in your TIMEZERO software (TZ Navigator/TZ Professional)
  • or via the TIMEZERO webstore (PC)

When should I choose MM3D?

Overall, it makes no sense to choose MM3D over TZ MAPS, considering the value of what’s included in TZ MAPS. However, should you decide that MM3D is what you would prefer, then you are free to do so.

Some cases where this might be better for you are:

  1. When you have an older version of TIMEZERO, where TZ MAPS is not available
  2. When you have an older piece of TZT hardware that is not compatible TZ MAPS
  3. If the area you need to purchase is not available in TZ MAPS format
  4. Or, if you don’t mind paying more but would just prefer a pay-as-you-go model.

Either way, if you choose TZ MAPS or MM3D, rest assured knowing that your charts will always come with the same high-standard and quality required for a safe and enjoyable time out on the water.

New User Interface

Our redesigned user interface will make your life much easier when it comes to route planning and all the features you are familiar with (Tides, Currents, Weather Forecast, etc.). All the concepts which made TIMEZERO a huge success (Tool Bar, Layers and Navdata) are now included in an enhanced User Interface fully adapted to be used on touch screens!

Security Cone

The new Security Cone is a feature in adherence with the official rules of the IMO. It uses the data in vector charts or the 3D data within the charts to detect shallow areas and isolated dangers. If an obstacle is detected inside this cone in front of the boat’s trajectory, an anti-grounding alarm will automatically be triggered.

Secure Route Planning

Route Planning is of the utmost importance for every boater. Our new technology assures the security of a route upon creation. Through color codes (green/red) it is instantaneously possible to know if the depth is sufficient for the safe passing of your boat.

And more!

Note: The release of TZ Navigator will mean that we will stop supporting all TIMEZERO v1.9.8 and below. We will continue however to support v2 on all compatible operating systems until the end of 2016 (Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1).

Why use a marine navigation software to prepare a route, a journey, or a marine expedition?

Marine navigation software has become an indispensable tool in the world of offshore racing. It is critical for race directors to ensure the most accurate preparation and conduct of a competitive race.

Route in the Baltic Sea MOD70 European Tour 2012 by Gilles Chiorri
Above screen shot shows a route section of the Baltic Sea MOD70 Step # 1 MOD70 European Tour 2012.

The question of whether to install electronic chart software can arise for coastal navigation (cruises or racing) and for offshore trips, so it is very important to identify the merits of using this type of tool….

If a reminder was necessary, the sea is of course, a formidable environment. It requires accurate planning, both on land and at sea. This anticipation is needed in order to fully understand, prepare and carry out navigation with good seamanship.

The following factors affect each and every route navigated: the distance and time needed to cover it depending on the boat specs, the type of coastline and its dangers, weather and sea conditions, tidal currents, the ports or shelters along the route etc.

Nowadays, a navigation software installed on a laptop such as TimeZero developed by MaxSea, allows integration with, and quick and easy access to all of the above elements in just a few clicks of the mouse.

Whether you are at home in the preparation phase, or in live navigation mode, course preparation is made extremely comprehensive, and also allows a high level of interface customization.

The TimeZero software features a wide zoom level on charts, (which is identical to SHOM charts, and should therefore remain “familiar-looking”) which is the equivalent of having a wide portfolio of paper charts immediately accessible. Thus the tools zoom-in and zoom-out then allow you to have a good visual picture of the desired navigation area.

TimeZero allows you to overlay satellite photos on your chart, so that you can visualize specific places in advance, and plan a correct approach to the area!

Route in Denmark by Gilles ChiorriIn addition, the “divider” tool (bearing/distance) can be used to quickly segment the route, or measure distances and position themselves in relation to geographic points of interest. It is possible to simultaneously create a course outline using the “route” tool and to start live navigation. With just a few clicks along the way, you have your route, distance and direction (true or magnetic option) between each waypoint, as well as the cumulative distance. You can name each waypoint, and insert or move a waypoint at any time during navigation of the route.

Preparing a route becomes fun and you can always refer back to your navigation logbook. By making all the possible adjustments, a basic route gradually transforms into a detailed course, corresponding with your expectations such as your safety criteria in relation to distance from shore or a shoal, a place that you want to see up close etc.

All data created in the software can then be saved with the route name, and even assigned to a specific layer, which as its name suggests can be displayed or hidden according to your wishes. Once activated, this route can be exported to your GPS for rapid access to route information.

Once the software is integrated with onboard navigation hardware (GPS and other suitable instruments) TimeZero is transformed into an even more powerful navigation aid. Your boat is symbolized by an icon to scale that moves in real time on your screen, as simple as a video game.

Route in Marseille MOD70 European Tour 2012 by Gilles Chiorri
Above screen shot: Marseille and landing zone changes MOD70 in Marseille (source MOD70 European Tour 2012).

After importing the marine weather forecast file (commonly known as a “GRIB” file), you can launch the routing function to optimize your route by integrating the effects of weather conditions on your route. You can also calculate the ETA on the next waypoint or decide the fastest route to reach your end point. The routing function and comprehensive weather of TimeZero opens the door to anticipation, and accurate planning.

In conclusion, after many years at the chart table equipped with a Cras Ruler, a handheld compass and dividers, with an eye on the GPS, it now seems essential to have TimeZero onboard, whatever the intended sailing, inshore or offshore, whether racing or cruising!

Happy navigating to all of you this summer.
