Gender inequality in the world of sailing and racing: The reality of women in sport from my perspective

This article was originally written by Isabelle Joschke who is a French-German skipper (Generali-Horizon Mixité.). She has raced 7 times in Solitaire du Figaro and is sponsored by MaxSea.
Joschke Isabelle

For me it seems that women representing the sport of sailing has become one of the images of our modern society. Women and of course girls are signing up and taking part in leisure sailing in the same numbers as men. However, when the level of competition rises, the gender ratio staggers towards men. In competitive racing as a whole, we, the women, represent only 5-10% of competitors.

How to use a Celestial Navigation Device

Celestial Navigation Devices take you back to the sailing of old. Why are FADs such a fad in the Pacific Islands?

Fishing offshore for Tuna which had until FADs had not been possible due to the risk of returning empty handed, is now commonplace. Captain’s Log: The wellbeing of those aboard

On all boats, the captain on board is given the prestigious role to command over others but with this power comes great responsibility, the responsibility of those on board. In the case of an accident, even if the victim had put himself in a dangerous situation, it is the skipper who will ultimately be responsible as it is he who must impose all security measures necessary to have avoided such a situation.
