Introducing Andreas Hanakamp: Olympian, sailing company director and TIMEZERO Ambassador!

Andreas Hanakamp is an experienced navigator having started his career by participating in the Olympics in Atlanta in 1996 and Athens in 2004. He competed as a crew member in the Austrian national team. He kept going with international competitions both in-shore and off-shore for several years.

With his impressive background, our TIMEZERO Ambassador decided to leverage his knowledge in sailing by opening a business specialized in consulting. Segelwelt, based in Austria, provides its services for charter companies and boat owners. Andreas and his collaborators offer advice on a wide range of topics concerning sailing with a team made up of technicians, engineers, consultants, boat builders and logistic specialists.

In this interview, Andreas Hanakamp tells us more about the way he uses TIMEZERO for his personal journey but also why he recommends TIMEZERO software for his customers. Find out about the new goals set by this man with a competitor’s soul.

Can you introduce yourself?

“I have been sailing for almost 40 years now. I started my career as a competitor by participating twice in the Olympics. I skippered as well in the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race and most of the offshore classics. After finishing with competition, I started creating segelwelt.at, a society focused on project management, safety at sea and weather routing services for cruising and racing. Besides (the services previously mentioned), we deal with boat constructors such as Seascape Yachts and Elvstrom Sails.”

Which TIMEZERO software did you choose and why?

“I have chosen TZ Professional as it fulfills all routing and navigation requirements.”

Was the installation process easy?

“Click and go!”

What is your feeling regarding the new TZ Professional v3/TZ Navigator v3 configuration?

“Navigation system which gives the yachtsman a tool from the professional world.”

TZ Professional is an ergonomic and powerful software with all the tools needed for professional and amateur racers. Specific settings such as the Weather Routing module and Position Report have been developed to provide the most advanced tools for sailors.

What are your first impressions of our marine navigation software in comparison to other programs available?

“Most powerful navigation software that encompasses all needs while others focus more on individual areas.”

What was the last trip you took; how did it go and what challenges did you face?

“The Cinquecento per due race in Italy which we have won through having the best understanding of quite a complex weather development situation.”

The first Cinquecento per due edition started in 1974, born from a group of sailors. Taking place in the Adriatic Sea, it is the largest race in the Mediterranean Sea with a reduced crew of 2 members. Starting from the Caorle in Italy, the crew has to sail 500 miles to the island of Susak in Croatia.

Why is TIMEZERO software so important for someone in your domain?

“One tool that does it all, not depending on any system the client has on board and I can easily hook it up with almost any system I find on board a client’s yacht.”

What is the most important feature for your profession?

“Routing and navigation.”

Do you have any upcoming projects?

“Working on a Barcelona World Race project and some smaller racing projects with clients before that.”
